WWF: 2,000 Wildlife Snares Removed in 2023

PHNOM PENH: The World Wildlife Foundation (WWF)-Cambodia released a press statement in recognition of World Ranger Day. According to their report, at least 2,000 snares were removed from protected wildlife sanctuaries in the first six month of 2023. Around 45 wild animals were also rescued from wildlife sanctuaries like Srepok, Phnom Prich, Prek Prasab and Sambo.

In their effort to conserve the Irrawaddy dolphin population in the Mekong Flooded Forest, law enforcement teams confiscated illegal fishing gear, including 33,000 metres of hook long-line and 35,000 metres of fishing nets. They also stopped 17 cases of illegal fishing and seized six motor boats.

The statement recognized the invaluable efforts of park rangers in conserving Cambodia’s wildlife. “Rangers and river guards of the Cambodian Government, with the participation of patrol members of the local communities, have been playing an active role in safeguarding wildlife, forest, fishery resources, as well as conserving cultural patrimonies in protected areas,” said the statement.

The Cambodian government along with the help of wildlife NGOs is making a concerted effort towards preserving and reinvigorating Cambodia’s treasured biodiversity, which has been threatened as the country continues to industrialize. Last year, the Ministry of Environment partnered with wildlife conservation organizations and authorities to enact a “Zero-Snare Campaign”, targeting the main players in the bush meat market. In 2021 and 2022 the campaign removed around 90,000 snares in protected wildlife areas. The program also aims to provide economic alternatives to those who rely on trapping wildlife to maintain their livelihoods.
